Saturday December 9th the Gettysburg Optimist will host our second Optimist Basketball sign ups. Come join us at the Gettysburg Middle School cafeteria from 9-11am.

The annual Gettysburg Optimist Christmas Dinner will be Wednesday December 13 at the Gettysburg Seminary Refectory. Social at 6 PM with dinner 6:30 PM. Calling all members to not miss out on this gala evening and all children and grandchildren are invited. President Dan has been told we may have a special jolly guest join us for the evening.

Don’t forget that signups for youth basketball will be held Saturday, December 2, 2017, at the Gettysburg Middle School Cafeteria, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The basketball program is open to all Gettysburg area students grades first through sixth. The program is free and all participants get a free t-shirt. Please spread the word and hope to see you this weekend!
The Optimist Club of Gettysburg met on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary Valentine Hall. A delicious pulled pork dinner was prepared by Biggerstaff Catering.
President Dan Mattern welcomed the members and guests. Dan opened the meeting with the invocation and pledge of allegiance. Dinner was served.
Business Meeting:
- Our guest speaker was Ruth Topper, representing STARS / GASD and Holiday Family Outreach. STARS is an acronym for Success Through Academic Recognition of Students. The mission of the STARS program is to motivate students to achieve academic excellence and improvement and to formally recognize their achievements. Holiday Family Outreach is a non profit organization dating back to 1953. They provide Christmas for low income and senior citizens in Adams County. The provisions include toys for children, apples donated by Rice Fruit CO., and ($25) food vouchers used at Kennies. This great service includes approximately 500 families and between 1,200 to 1,400 children. If you are interested in volunteering to help with these organizations both have web sites with detailed information. Our thanks to Ruth Topper and all of the volunteers for all you do.
- Approval was made of the minutes from the 11-01 meeting and treasurer’s report.
- President Dan thanked all who volunteered for the Christmas Salvation Army Bell ringing date of 12-21. If you are interested in volunteering please call Dan ASAP.
- The Christmas Magic Show telephone solicitation is under way.
- Mindy reported on our Optimist basketball program and sign-ups. Thank you Mindy and Kris for your many hours you give for this wonderful project.
- Wayne will be getting oyster tickets out to everyone, let’s be proactive and call Wayne and request at least 20 tickets !!!
- Sam reported that our 501 C 3 non profit status is on its way through all the necessary legal channels.
- The meeting was concluded by reciting the Optimist Creed.

Business Meeting:
- Governor Dallas Smith joined us for the evening and discussed requirements for Honor Clubs with part of the criteria being to net a plus (3) for our membership. Dallas also recognized Gettysburg for setting the bar for all of our activities and contributions to our community.
- VP Brian Skidmore introduced his guest, Chris Bender, assistant golf course superintendent at Chambersburg Country Club. Chris and his wife reside in Biglerville.
- Approval was made of the minutes from the 10-18 meeting and treasurer’s report.
- President Dan thanked all who volunteered for the Christmas Salvation Army Bell ringing date of 12-21.
- Doug Miller reported the Christmas Magic Show telephone solicitation is under way.
- Dan thanked Fred Darling for his time serving as Santa Claus and gave a thank you to Tedd Sayres for stepping to the plate to be our new Santa Claus.

The weather is changing and the Gettysburg Optimist Club is getting in gear for Optimist Basketball. Flyers will be going out to the Gettysburg area schools this month. Due to a change in school policy, the flyers will be available on the flyer table instead of being sent home with the students. Youth in grades 1-6 are welcome to participate in this free basketball program. Sessions begin January 6th at the Gettysburg Middle School gym and will occur every Saturday through the end of February. Children can be registered by 1) signing up in person at one of the two sign-up sessions in December or 2) completing the below registration form and emailing it to [email protected] or mailing it to the coaches, Kris or Mindy Accardi at 5A Bonniefield Circle Gettysburg, PA 17325.

The Optimist Club of Gettysburg met on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the Gettysburg Lutheran Valentine Hall. A delicious barbeque chicken dinner was prepared by Biggerstaff’s Catering.
President Dan Mattern welcomed the members and guests. Dan opened the meeting with the invocation and pledge of allegiance. A Dinner was served.
Business Meeting:
- Dan introduced our surprise speaker Vice President Brian Skidmore. Brian told the club he was a Michigan native. As a young boy his family had traveled to Gettysburg on vacation and he thought this would be a great place to work and live. He majored in history and ended up being hired by the National Park Service in the Ground Maintenance Department. With this employment, Brian is responsible for fighting 1st structure fires. He also has more recently been involved in fighting the western wild forest fires in states such as Idaho and Montana. When deployed to these regions he is situated in the bush for 12 days at a time with the bare necessities for surviving and the tools used to fight wild fires.
Brian has also pulled hurricane detail in Cumberland Island, Georgia after massive storm destruction.
Thank you Brian for sharing your young career experience with the club.
- The main order of business was the approval of the minutes from the 10-04 meeting and the treasures report.
- President Dan discussed the Christmas Salvation Army Bell ringing and a date of 12-21 was approved by members in attendance. If you are interested in being involved in this project email or call Dan for the availability of open times.
- Our 2017-2018 year meeting and event schedule has been formed and will be included as an attachment with the minutes.
