The Gettysburg Optimist Club met on Wednesday, August 3, 6:00 pm, at the Lake Heritage Pavilion. President Bruce Bradshaw opened the meeting at 6:35 pm with the Pledge of Allegiance and a minute of silence.

President’s Report: President Bruce discussed a letter addressed to the club from the Internal Revenue Service.  It is hoped that a representative from Ruth’s Harvest will speak at the August 17 meeting, which is also the Pig Roast and Zone Meeting.  The State Convention of the Optimist Club will be held in Gettysburg on August 26,27,and 28. Anyone interested in attending, please contact Bruce. A representative from the new Tractor Supply Store will speak to the club sometime in the future.  It is planned that the annual Golf Tournament will be held again in April at the Links.  New bylaws from the state Optimist Board have been received. These will be sent to all members.

Video: President Bruce presented a video of the winner of the Optimist International Oratorical Contest, Cameron Tyler. The topic of the contest was “How Being the Very Best Brings Out the Best in Others”. Tyler mentioned that he is a teacher and that he tries to bring out the best in his students.

Bruce also showed the Denzel Washington video, which emphasizes the values of the Optimist Club.

Members Comments:

Daryl and Mark reported that plans for the annual Pig Roast, August 17 at the Pavilion are well underway. This is also the Zone Meeting.  Bruce has contacted Dallas Smith to obtain a count of those attending from other clubs.  SPOUSES AND GUESTS ARE WELCOME.

Don reported that everything is ready for Soccer Parking at which club members assist: August 27 and 28.  Don said that he does need additional volunteers to help especially Sunday 8/28 6:45am-11:00am. Please call Don Davis if you can help. Don reported that he received a letter of thanks from the Historical Society for our contribution.

Treasurer’s Report: Tom Barako reported :  Tom said that the annual budget  will be presented soon.

President Bradshaw brought the meeting to a close with a reading of the Optimist Creed at 7:45pm

He also plans to present a video of the winning speech from the recent Optimist Oratorical Contest. Please contact Fred if you plan to attend.

The Gettysburg Optimist Club met at the Pavilion on Wednesday, June 15. President Bruce Bradshaw opened the meeting at 7:00pm with a minute of silence. Then dinner was provided by members Walt Jones and Fred Darling.

After dinner President Bruce introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr.  Steve Niebler. Mr. Niebler is a member of Healthy Adams County Bike and Pedestrian Inc. His main topic was to inform everyone about the upcoming  Bike Rodeo, 8:45 am, July 9, at Gettysburg Recreation Park. The rodeo will feature a presentation by Trooper Myers from the Pennsylvania State Police. This will be at the Youth Activities Center behind the Charlie Sterner Building at rec park. There is no charge to participate. Steve also discussed plans for new bike paths in the area. Club members then asked Steve various questions.

Walt Jones mentioned that someone apparently has been hacking our membership roster and pretending to be a member recommending weight loss products and other items. Just be aware!

President Bruce commented about the recent launching of the USS Zumwalt, the newest class of Navy destroyers. The

USS Zumwalt sports advanced technology and a stealthy shape designed to minimize its visibility on radar and reduce

the size of the crew.  It took 20 years to build.

The Gettysburg Optimist Club met Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at the Lake Heritage pavilion. President Bruce Bradshaw opened the meeting at 7:00pm with an invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. This was followed by an outstanding dinner provided by Joe MacDowell and Tom Barako.

Following the dinner President Bruce introduced our speaker for the evening, Mrs. Darlene Resh, Developmental Education Coordinator for Penn State Extension. Darlene had a very informative slide presentation explaining the function of the 4H Clubs.  She said that 4H is a youth development  non-formal education program of Penn State Cooperative Extension for youth between the ages of 8 and 18. The mission is to help young people become self-directed, productive, and contributing members of a diverse society. The 4H Club has over 1000 school enrichment participants and over 200 in the traditional program. Darlene answered questions from members at the end of her program.

President’s Report:

Bruce and his wife Sue attended the Reading is Fundamental Day on April 29 at James Getty Elementary School. Bruce and Sue distributed books to the students and presented Principal Donna Harrison with a check for $1400  from the
Gettysburg Optimist Club.

Bruce and Daryl attended the  York Optimist Olympics on May 13,representing the Club. It was a very busy day with many participants.

Bruce represented the Gettysburg Optimist Club  on May 25 at the Dollars for Scholars  Academic Awards Ceremony, held at Gettysburg High School. Two $1000 checks each were presented to Olivia Young and Antonio Rinaldi.

Many thanks to those who assisted at Soccer Parking and the Golf Tournament, both very successful days.

Soccer Parking: Don Davis reported that soccer parking on May 28 and 29 went very well. The proceeds totaled $4252
for the club. Thank you to everyone who helped.

Golf Tournament: Bruce reported a very successful day. The proceeds for the club came to $10155. The Mulligan Package did well,$2000, and the Auction did well,$450. Thank you everyone who assisted for a great job!

A good start to your summer season would be to attend the Gettysburg Optimist Club Meeting at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, June 1. This will be the first meeting of the year to be held in the pavilion at beautiful Lake Heritage. So come on out and enjoy the bucolic setting along with a great dinner, good fellowship, and an interesting speaker!

Perhaps many of you belong to 4H or know someone in 4H. Our speaker for the evening  will be Darlene M. Rush, 4H Youth Development Educator, Penn State  Extension. She will be discussing the various 4H programs geared toward  benefitting young people.

A very special day observed by Bruce Bradshaw and Daryl Aurand at the York Optimist Olympics. Over 600 people including participants and volunteers made this a lasting day for each child. York Optimist Club is to be commended for their work hosting this their 24th annual Optimist Olympics. Well Done to York Optimist Club!

The Optimist Olympics are being held in York this Friday, May 13. They need volunteers to assist in the various competitions.

Bruce Bradshaw will be attending and assisting at the Optimist Olympics. If anyone from the Optimist Club is interested in going, please contact Bruce : 717-359-7620. He has room to take people in his car-leaving at 8:00am.
