Guest: Nancy from Meals and More spoke very passionately about this wonderful summer program. Meals and More has been helping children for the last 11 years. They seek to help children who are most in need. Many of the children have ties with the Homeless Shelter, Survivors Shelter, Soup Kitchen or Agape House. The program accepts 20 students per summer and there are 5 children on the waiting list. Their current ages are 5-10. On Monday-Friday, from 10a-2pm the youth come to the Prince of Peace Episcopal Church. Two meals are provided, along with various enrichment activities to support the children physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Each summer there is a theme and this year the six instructors are teaching the youth about Russia. The Optimist Club presented Nancy with a $2100 donation to help Meals and More continue their service to our community.
President Report: Elections will take place next meeting. Please consider serving as a club officer. Strong leadership is essential to the continued success of this organization.
Secretary Report: The A&A report has been submitted. Thank-you notes have all gone out for the golf tournament sponsors.
Treasurer Report: Tom is working on the proposed budget for next year. There are several options on the table to help the club remain fiscally responsible with our general funds. The need for additional funds has arisen in part due to the increased cost for meals. Some considerations to accommodate for the increase in our budget include: having members and guests pay $25 for the Installation Banquet and Holiday Party, have the payment of dues correspond with our October-September fiscal year instead of our current January-December payment schedule, lower dues and then members would pay for their own meal at the meetings they attend, or keep current rate for dues and members that attend a meeting would contribute $5 towards their meal. Tom will bring some numbers to an upcoming meeting for the club to decide the best avenue for meeting our expenses.
Soccer Parking: The parking for the upcoming Soccer Tournament will be on Sat. and Sun. August 23rd and 24th. Don would like two 1-2 more people for the Sat. afternoon slot. Please contact Don if you can help.
Public Relations: Marci designed business cards for members to carry and dispense to potential members, sponsors, or to post at local establishments. Extra cards will be available at the next meeting.
Upcoming Events:
Business Meeting and Elections: Wednesday, August 6th at 6:30pm at the Lake Heritage Pavilion. (Kris and Mindy will provide the meal)
4th Quarter Zone Meeting/Pig Roast: Wednesday, August 20th at 6:30pm at the Lake Heritage Pavilion.
Wayne Hill-a-Palooza (social event and trivia night): Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:30pm at the Hill’s home.
End of Summer Steak Night: Wednesday, September 17th at 6:30pm (location TBD).
Member Kudos: Apparently Optimism runs in the family! Bruce Bradshaw’s granddaughter, Mia Defalco, was presented the award for “Most Optimistic” at her pre-school graduation ceremony. Way to go Mia!

Uncategorized4th Quarter Zone Meeting Minutes
UncategorizedThe 4th Quarter Zone Meeting and Pig Roast, which was hosted by the Gettysburg Club, had a great turnout. There were representatives from East York, Lancaster and Gettysburg. We even had a guest from the Stroudsburgs Optimist Club and John Breidenbach spoke about the A&A reports.
Governor Kathleen Mancheck led the meeting. She spoke of how the last two years have been some of her most rewarding experiences as an Optimist member. While the Optimist mission is “bringing out the best in kids”, we are also “bringing out the best in ourselves and each other”.
Kathleen spoke of the need for a Lt. Governor for Zone 7. She strongly encouraged those in attendance (and those who could not attend) to consider the Lt. Governor position. Tom McGlynn, who was recently inducted into the Optimist District Hall of Fame, did an amazing job serving as our Lt. Governor. Marion Duarte and Elmo Vestal volunteered to help the incoming Lt. Governor in any way possible. Generally, the Lt. Governor has served as a past Club President. If you do not meet this requirement, you could function as an Assistant Lt. Governor. The Lt. Governor leads zone meetings, visits clubs within the zone and submits 2 reports annually. Please consider taking on this role.
Thirty-one new Optimist Clubs have been created this year through Optimist International. Our district has added 186 new members. The Optimists of East York and Lancaster have increased their net membership in the last year.
Club Reports
East York: The East York Club had an active year. Their annual Pig Roast was a fundraising success. They participated in several service projects, including Optimist Olympics, Pillowcase Project for kids with cancer, and they took youth who are on the waiting list for York/Adams Big Brothers/Big Sisters to a Revolution Baseball game.
Gettysburg: The Gettysburg Club’s big service project was the 8 week Optimist Basketball program. The Golf Tournament and Oyster/Shrimp Feed were both very successful fundraisers. The next Oyster/Shrimp Feed is scheduled for Saturday, February 28th. The Club was able to donate more than $20,000 to local youth organizations.
Lancaster: The Lancaster Club is coming up on a big milestone. They will be celebrating their 70th anniversary on September 16th. They have also been very busy this year. The Lancaster Club received a matching grant from Optimist International for a 4 week healthy food prep course. They have walked in several local parades and approximately 50 youth participated in a Fishing Derby.

Optimist Meeting Minutes 8-6-14
UncategorizedThe majority of the evening was devoted to electing officers for the upcoming year. Kris has agreed to lead us as President next year along with a Vice President who will be able to serve as President in 2016. The Gettysburg Optimist Club has many great potential leaders, the next one could be you! Tom has graciously agreed to continue to master our budget as Treasurer. Joe will be reprising the role of Secretary. The Board of Directors will include: Kris, Tom, Joe, Walt, Mindy, and a VP to be named. As there will not be a “past President” to sit on the board we will add one additional seat to the Board of Directors. Please contact Kris (267-391-7834 or kristopheraccardi@gmail.com) if you are interested in the V.P. or Board of Directors position.
Treasurer Report: Our activities fund (source for our donations) is looking good as a result of our fundraising efforts. However, our general fund (fund for OI and districtdues, dinners, ect.) will need to see a boost of revenue to accommodate for rising expenses. Tom has outlined several options in order to maintain our budget next year. He will review these with the Board of Directors and then the options will be presented to the Club for a vote.
Fourth Quarter Zone Meeting: Our Club will again host this Pig Roast/Zone meeting. It will be on Wednesday, August 20th at the Lake Heritage Pavilion. Our Governor, Kathleen Manchec will be in attendance along with John Breidenbach the A&A report chair, so let’s have a strong showing!
Soccer Parking: Round two of the Soccer Tournament Parking is set for Saturday, August 23rd and Sunday, August 24th. Thank you to all the volunteers. Contact Don Davis if you need a refresher on your scheduled time.
Chamber of Commerce: There will be a Membership Mixer on Thursday, August 21st from 5-7pm at the Gettysburg YWCA. If interested RSVP by 8/14/14 to 334-8151 or Gettysburg-chamber.com.
Golf Tournament: The date is set for next year’s Tournament. The Links will again host the event on Thursday May 21st. The Club looks to get into the swing of planning very soon.
